Social Justice: Art for Change
Due to COVID 19, this project has been put on hold until a time when the virus is no longer a threat to community health.
I will be piloting a mural project in the Spring of 2021, with The East End United Community Center (EEUCC), a non-profit organization in Uniontown, PA, that provides educational, social, cultural and economic opportunities to the local community. The director contacted me to collaborate with them in creating a social justice mural (see above) in their facility. I want to engage teens and young adults in the mural-making process as well as in discussions on social justice. A culminating community event, facilitated by Dr. Julio Palma, a member of the Fayette Dialogue Group, a Penn State University organization, will lead a discussion addressing the current issues in our country.
I will post the process here and on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pam.valcante |
My goal is three-fold:
Additionally, I plan to reach out to and collaborate with local community organizations and schools in designing and creating two wall murals that will be a jumping off point in stimulating conversation among diverse populations on equity, freedom, and social justice.
- teach participating community members how to create a mural using a mathematical grid method to enlarge an image onto a wall, and then have participants help paint the image.
- facilitate on-site events and invite the community to engage in dialogue based on the mural images and their own experiences, thoughts, and resolutions in their response to racism.
- have event participants add the finishing touches to the murals by writing their own personal responses and thoughts onto the mural itself.
